<image:caption>Meet Kylik Kisoun Taylor and his uncle, Gerry Kisoun. Kylik has always felt a strong connection to the wide-open spaces of the Beaufort Delta and the traditional lifestyle of the Inuvialuit people, though his childhood was very different. Kylik is of Inuvialuit, Gwitch’in and Scandinavian descent. He grew up in Ontario hunting, trapping and mushing dogs with his father. In 2003 Kylik made a permanent move to Inuvik. His uncles, Gerry Kisoun and Dennis Allen, as well as his Daduk (grandfather) Victor Allen, constantly took Kylik out in the bush where he learned the way of the land. They taught him the stories of his people and important cultural traditions and knowledge. Gerry helped him get his first caribou, Dennis taught him to build a bush camp and his Daduk Victor told him the old stories. With the help of his family, Kylik was able to become rooted in his culture and acquire the knowledge and skills needed to be out on the land on his own. In 2006 Kylik started Tundra North Tours with the dream of being able to share his love of the Arctic and all it has to offer with visitors from around the world. As a bonus he now spends a large portion of his time out on the land he loves so much! Kylik is a father, bush man, amateur boxer, and entrepreneur. Gerry is of Inuvialuit and Gwich’in descent and was born and raised on the vast and virtually untouched Mackenzie Delta. He brings his many years of experience, travel and traditional teaching to his tours. His extensive knowledge of Inuvik and surrounding area as well as life on the land makes for some interesting and entertaining story telling. Gerry is a one of a kind guide! He is currently retired from his work with visitors services at Parks Canada. He is now involved with numerous boards within the Town of Inuvik and has been appointed Deputy Commissioner of the Northwest Territories. He began his career path as a Special Constable in the Provost Section of the Inuvik Royal Canadian Mounted Police detachment. During his career with the RCMP, Gerry was posted in Alberta, Yukon and the Northwest Territories.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Hand Crafted Stories - Saliqmiut Ep. 4 Traditional Inuvialuit clothing provided more than protection from the elements. It was also a form of expression and storytelling. Sewn into the precious fabrics were stories of people, places and situations that would become a part of the piece - with every stitch life stories are woven into works of art - weaving together the past and the present, the traditional and the contemporary. Developing these traditional techniques required skill and creativity that can only be taught by Elders and passed on through many generations. Through the creation of these garments and the techniques shared, stories and traditions are kept alive. Here’s the hand crafted stories of various Inuvialuit artists.</image:caption>

For millennia, pingos have played an important part of Inuvialuit culture, serving as landmarks for the Inuvialuit who have lived and travelled the Western Arctic, along with providing a place to camp, collect berries and get out on the land. As such an important and everlasting feature of Tuk, Pingos continue to inspire stories, traditions and of course, art. Here’s the stories inspired by these iconic landmarks.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Meet Lenora Barrett, an incredibly talented photographer based in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. Lenora mainly focuses on landscapes, aurora borealis, and wildlife. She sometimes shoots portraits and special events such as weddings, but certainly prefers the freedom of being in nature to take her photos. Lenora is never far from her camera, already ready to capture a stunning moment whenever it occurs. Her skill as a photographer stems from her passion, as she is mostly self-taught. Lenora got into photography in 2014, when she started taking photos out on hikes. “I would share my phone photos on social media with my friends and family. One day, a relative told me that they had created a slide show with some of the images I had posted, which made me think that this might be something I am good at.” Motivated by the reception of her photos, Lenora bought a professional camera and started learning as much as she could about the technical aspects of photography. That’s when her passion truly began. Lenora was born in Fort Smith. She moved to Yellowknife when she was eight years old and still calls it her home to this day. The Northwest Territories have offered Lenora boundless sources of inspiration. Accompanied by her dogs, she loves to hike Yellowknife’s surroundings to capture images of what nature and its occupants have to offer. Lenora also joined a small group of local photographers called the Aurora Trackers, and she always brings her camera along with her while she travels to other countries. She shares her favorite images regularly on social media. With the Northwest Territories famous for having the World’s best aurora, Leonra takes full advantage of Yellowknife’s location. Sitting directly under the auroral oval, Lenora is able to capture some of the most stunning aurora images on an almost nightly basis. Her work speaks for itself. “It never occurred to me that I would be a photographer. However, I’m a firm believer that we all have gifts. I think it’s so important for people to pursue whatever is special about who they are, whether it be sewing, painting, carving, or cooking. Following our unique passion is bound to make us all much happier!”</image:caption>

<image:caption>Meet Leela Gilday, a Dene-Canadian singer/songwriter, born and raised in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. She has released five solo albums since 2002, two of which have won the Juno Award for Indigenous Music Album of the Year. Leela Gilday has a voice that comes straight from the heart. Confessing her stories to her audiences with a gutsy voice and open stage presence, Gilday weaves her experiences as a northerner, a member of the Dene nation, and a traveler into a beautiful world that transports the listener. If you’re from the North, Leela’s music is home. If you’ve never been, it will take you there. Born and raised in the Northwest Territories, she writes about the people and the land that created her. The power in her voice conveys the depth of her feelings of love and life in a rugged environment and vibrant culture, as if it comes straight from that earth. Leela’s family is from Délįne on the shore of Great Bear Lake and her rich vocals dance across the rhythmic beats of traditional Dene drumming as smoothly as a bass line onstage the largest venues in the country. And she has played them all. Leela has toured festivals and concert halls with her four-piece band through every province and territory in Canada. She has played in the United States, Greenland, Australia, New Zealand and several countries in Europe. Her live shows are where she connects with fans who have followed her on a 20-year career and where new fans are born. She reaches into their hearts and feels the energy of every person in front of her as she guides them on a journey through song and experience. She believes music has an inexplicable effect on people. It is a place where she can share light and dark and the most vulnerable moments, with a clarity and genuine purpose that reassures her listeners through every word. She is a storyteller, and through this, reflects the world onto itself. Leela’s fifth album "North Star Calling" was released in fall of 2019 and has since been awarded the Indigenous Artist of the Year JUNO Award 2021. It is more raw, more intimate and more Leela than anything you’ve heard from her before. “Leela Gilday’s voice comes straight from the heart. It’s the voice of a winner; the song of a warrior. That’s the call of Leela Gilday.” - David Newland, Roots Music Canada</image:caption>

<image:caption>Meet Joe Buffalo Child, also known around the world as Joe “The Aurora Hunter”. Owner of North Star Adventures, a 100% Indigenous owned and operated, Yellowknife based company. In the span of five minutes as a guest of Joe’s, you will get to know the storyteller, the practical joker, the astute businessman, and more than anything else, the lover of the Aurora. Joe has looked up at those lights all his life growing up on these lands. But each time he’s mesmerized anew. “It’s like fresh air, a blue sky and sunshine.” Sharing the magic of the Aurora with travellers from all over the world is one of the most rewarding parts of Joe’s job. Some of those visitors aren’t unfamiliar with cosmic scenery — like the time Star Wars’ Carrie Fisher joined him on a tour — but all of them are starstruck by our captivating Northern Lights. Joe first thought of getting into tourism 25 years ago, but it wasn’t until 2007 that he began Aurora hunting tours. “I called them Aurora hunting tours because I wanted to incorporate our Indigenous culture into the name of the tour,” he says, noting how the ‘Aurora hunting’ term is now popular in Alaska, Norway and Iceland. “We mark ourselves as the world’s first Aurora hunting tour company.” North Star Adventures offer packages that include paddling down the Dehcho and puts Dene culture, history and experiences at the forefront. North Star Adventures runs boat tours from Fort Providence to Fort Simpson, with trips into Nahanni National Park Reserve. He offers an Arctic Ocean tour, where guests can experience Inuvialuit culture on the Arctic coast. Joe also organizes and accommodates VIP guests, customizing packages that allow deep-pocketed travellers to travel by private jet and the natural jewels of the Northwest Territories in comfort and style. He has even put together an unparalleled ice road adventure, from Yellowknife, up the Mackenzie Valley Winter Road and over to Colville Lake - a distance of 1,600 kilometres. Joe ensures every experience is genuine, calling upon his connections across the North when putting these packages together. When guests paddle to shore in Fort Simpson, they might be met by the timeless, pulsing beat of Dene drumming; groups canoeing down the Dehcho will learn Dene history from local elders and leaders with each community stop down the river. With his focus on summer adventure, one thing’s for sure - he may have started as Joe “The Aurora Hunter”, he's now so much more.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Meet Matthew Grogono M.B. and Roland Laufer. Since 1994, Matthew has been hand-crafting glassware from recycled glass, such as wine bottles, and decorating them in original northern designs. This endeavour has grown into Old Town Glassworks, a workers co-operative that now runs creative workshops for members of the public seven days a week, as well as selling hand-made northern glassware and northern crafts. Matthew’s passion for recycling and repurposing led him to convert a washing machine and treadmill into a glass ground and polishing device, but his desires for repurposing old items doesn’t stop there. Matthew is a vessel builder entrepreneur who utilizes one of Yellowknife’s most unique forms of real-estate. Nestled beside Joliffe Island, practically within swimming distance of downtown, is the North’s most eclectic expanse of housing. Yellowknife’s houseboats bob on the cool waves of Great Slave Lake, sheltering a funky population of artists and back-to-the-landers. Here, Matthew lives on the Icarus V, a repurposed vessel that he claims is the oldest continually operating solar powered vessel in Canada, if not the Northern hemisphere. Roland, who is a graphic artist and the office manager of Old Town Glassworks, lives by the motto of recycling, reducing, reusing. This is his reason for also living on a houseboat. A lifestyle that he feels makes a person more conscious of their impact compared to a person living on land in a normal house.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Meet Behchokǫ̀ artist Ray McSwain. Born in Yellowknife in 1971 and raised in the largest Dene community of Rae-Edzo, Ray spent his life surrounded in the same natural, scenic beauty of the spectacular Northwest Territories that has inspired many northern artists. Ray began seriously drawing at a young age and won class room drawing contest's after his teacher purchased his drawing and encouraged him to develop his talent more. He began to paint in the ninth grade, independently developing his very unique style. As Ray's talents developed through the local school's art program, he quickly became recognized as a first rate artist with a very special talent. 'I think it runs in the family, my dad is an artist too, carving in soapstone.' Ray was rewarded by being top art student at Chief Jimmy Bruneau Regional High School. Ray's achievements did not stop after high school. The NWT Volleyball Association was thrilled to have Ray design a logo for them, and Trans Canada Pipelines couldn't resist purchasing his work which is now on display in Houston, Texas. Many businesses and individuals in the community of Rae-Edzo have Ray's work on display. Perhaps the reason for Ray's early success has been his spiritual abstract style that includes a stunning combination of wildlife, natural beauty and northern lights. Just as important to Ray's style are his colour schemes which vary from smooth blending to sharp contrasts, such as bright Northern lights against a black star filled night sky. Ray describes the use of his paintings as 'A way for me to show my respect for the harmony that exists between indigenous people and nature and the beauty of my culture of the True North.' On every painting that Ray finishes, a small drum appears by his signature as a symbol of where he started painting, and 'the beauty of our songs of our culture' Chief Jimmy Bruneau Regional High School. 'Without the school's encouragement, I never would have developed my art to where it is now.' 'What encourages me to do my artwork is the love of people that say to me that they like my work, without you people, I would never developed the beauty of my talent.'</image:caption>

<image:caption>We are Baby Rhino Rescue, a group of professionals with our feet firmly planted in the “real world.” However, we are passionate about saving the rhino from extinction and use our talents towards this end. We volunteer our time and work with carefully chosen organizations on the ground. In the short amount of time we have been operating, we have been game changers. We move mountains! With the five partners we support, we aim to blend and use our wide network in the rhino fraternity to augment and streamline the basic work of keeping rhinos healthy and safe. BRR supports many initiatives which are key to the maintenance of healthy and safe rhino populations. These include building strongholds, providing funding for milk and supplemental feed, installing motion sensor and License Plate Recognition cameras, plus a host of other critical, expensive and basic components that our partners need on a regular basis. Due to unprecedented poaching, rhinos are in greater need of safe areas so they can wander, graze, have mud baths, wade in rivers and live real rhino lives. Baby Rhino Rescue works with our partners to establish these strongholds. Whether it's funding for electrified perimeter fences, a drone, or inoculations against Clostridium for every rhino in the reserve, BRR has been there. We have been instrumental in creating these safe spaces by providing funds for anti-poaching units. From guard salaries to the purchase of dogs and horses to making sure the guards are comfortable; all of this goes a long way to help ensure the survival of the species. Together we can make a difference! Through symbolic “adoption,” making a monthly or one-time donation, or honoring a loved one, you become part of the systematic plan to save the rhino from extinction.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Poaching Crisis Africa is home to the world’s most iconic wildlife. But poaching might destroy it forever. ‍ Poaching threatens a number of species. Even those that may be protected in national parks or wildlife reserves. Poaching is usually done for profit, with animal parts sold to black and illegal markets. The result is that countless wild animals have been attacked and their numbers are critically depleted. Beautiful creatures such as the rhinoceros and elephant have long been targets of poachers. The rhinoceros for its horn. The elephant for the ivory of its tusks. These are only two examples of the many species in Africa that are reaching near-extinction. Rhino horn is falsely believed to treat hangovers, impotence, fever, and cancer. But it’s proven to cure none of the above. The demand for rhino horn is exceedingly high on the black market and is valued even more than gold. Ivory is carved into jewelry, utensils, religious figurines, and trinkets. But is it worth the life of an elephant? No. But there are people fighting on the frontlines. Networks of organizations are working to fight the war against poaching and Baby Rhino Rescue is among them. We fund anti-poaching units at a number of our partner organizations in our fight to save the rhino from extinction.</image:caption>
